Listen Now

Prop styling is an art unto itself, as every design professional knows. Getting the setting right and offering an authentic glimpse into the client’s home is the best way to create photos that appeal to your new and ideal clients.

In this episode we learn:

  • to learn the skill, assist a stylist who has experience
  • designing and styling are two different talents—bring a stylist in before a home is photographed so they can give it that lived in look with accessories, art, books, flowers, pillows, and throws
  • projects should feel realistic to achieve the biggest impact
  • it’s important to shoot your best projects even when work is slow
  • find a place to keep inspiration ideas so you’ll have them when the time comes

DESIGN INTERVENTION

Even if you discuss the project at the outset and agree on a budget for props and expenses, things will undoubtedly be added to the list in the days leading up to the shoot. Make sure that you make your client aware that these additions will incur more time and money. In the early days, I used to keep exactly to the budget, sometimes digging into my own pocket. Don’t do this!

About Robin Zachary

My love of prop styling began even before I knew what to call it. As a child, I was inspired by my grandmothers, my aunt, and my mother, who grew up and lived in New York City in the 30s, 40s & 50s and collected beautiful vintage bags, jewelry, sweaters, and tableware. I was excited to receive whatever “outdated old things” they would give me, (which was like hitting the jackpot!) and use them in my photo shoots. Now that they all are gone, they live on in my heart through these beloved items.
