Better than a Beach Holiday

July 20, 2017

Taking a week off work to work? Doesn’t sound at all restorative. However, that’s exactly how I’d describe my time volunteering for the Carter Work Project and Habitat for Humanity.

I met up with a group of friends from California and Florida in Edmonton, the site of this year’s special 150 year celebration build. We worked side by side all week, gently ribbing each other about our new attire (hard hats and steel toed boots) and unwinding with tired muscles and stories of new-found skills. For instance, I can now brag about installing wood floors and my mad handling of a jigsaw. Despite our best efforts, no one works harder than the President and Mrs. Carter. Their work ethic and devotion (to Habitat and each other) is truly inspiring.

I hope to sign up annually for a build. After all, it’s much less stressful to shop for a hardhat and steel toed boots than it is to shop for a bathing suit!
